Fundamental principles of the origins of Korean consonants

The initial and final sounds were represented by 16 (14 in modern Korean) consonant letters, which were further divided into five groups (see below). Each group has a basic letter from (ㄱ, ㄴ, ㅁ, ㅅ, ㅇ), depiction the outline of the tongue, mouth, teeth or throat as these sounds are uttered:

(ㄱ) depicts the outline of the root of the tongue blocking the throat
(ㄴ) depicts the outline of the tongue touching the upper palate
(ㅁ) depicts the outline of the mouth
(ㅅ) depicts the outline of the incisor
(ㅇ) depicts the outline of the throat

The other letters in each group were formed by adding strokes to the basic letters
